Water Supply
The water supply will be turned off from the 31st of October to the 1st April
for the winter, to conserve water and to avoid freezing pipes etc
If you need water for greenhouses during this period, then please ensure
that you have a water butt that is protected from frost.
Any waterbutts that are unprotected, especially plastic, may split if they freeze.
It is usually best if they are left empty over winter.
Water Conservation
As we are now responsible for the payment of water rates, which based on last years bill amounts to approximately £13.00 per plot, we should all take extra care over our water usage. Please use water butts, if possible, to collect rain water off greenhouses and sheds and only use a hose when necessary.
Concrete Cisterns
The concrete cisterns may be fitted with a folding stainless steel cover commissioned by
Crewe Town Allotment Federation.
If so, care must be taken when opening these lids as they are heavy.
They must not be used as a foot support while filling a watering can etc as they will be very slippery when wet and they must be closed after use.
Also can we please ensure that these cisterns are refilled after use for health and safety reasons.
The cisterns over time can become silted and have to be dredged to remove deposits.
Please do not wash allotment produce, tools, hands etc under the taps above these cisterns as the soil washed off is the cause of the majority of the silting and this then encourages the growth of algae etc.
Please use a separate bucket or other alternative.
Thank you
